Four million Germans regularly go fishing. With some, it’s virtually an addiction. The documentary HOBBY WITH A CATCH (original title: HOBBY MIT WIDERHAKEN) shows the fascinating and the plug-ugly sides of fishing for sport. In Germany alone the industry generates billions of euros in revenue each year. But the film also poses the uncomfortable question: Do fish experience pain, after all?
Screenplay/Directors: Carsten Rau and Hauke Wendler
Camera: André Wawro
Editor: Tim Boehme
Commissioning Editors: Christoph Mestmacher and Sabine Reifenberg
Production: PIER 53 Filmproduktion
“The film gives food for thought, not just figuratively, and not just for anglers.”
(Hamburger Abendblatt)
“In the end, Rau is certain that the possibility of pain perception exists for fish and he is set on letting his actions be defined by this precept. The path to this insight is not for folks with sensitive dispositions. (…) Rau asks the viewer to feast on a hard-hitting diet of scenes. On the other hand, his cinematic argumentation is worth seeing and logically convincing.”
