March 1, 2022 marks the 50th birthday of an invention that drove parents crazy and young people across Europe: the Interrail ticket. Being able to travel by train for a month through 21 countries – no matter where, no matter how far! A feeling of freedom and adventure, with a touch of international understanding. The GDR equivalent of Interrail was called ‘Jugendtourist’. It was organized by the FDJ and not half as wild. But it was, too, a crash course in growing up.
